Memorial Day 2015

Well, it's Memorial day and I was hoping to get some work done on some  modeling projects, but regular life got in the way. I was able to take in some war films in a War movie Marathon on Antenna TVwhile working on bills and paper work.

The first film I caught was "Castle Keep"
 I really Liked this film!
INDB info:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064137/

Then I saw just some of "Beach Red"
INDB info:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061389/

I was able to see 3/4 of Anzio
INDB info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062673/

And finally I watched all of "The Bridge at Remagen"

Acrlyic Pumice Gel for Basing and Terrain

I accidentally bought Vallejo heavy Gel Gloss 26591, and did not know what to do with it. So while searching internet for practical use of gel, I found This VIDEO on this product for basing, and it seemed very interesting. It took me a while to track down this exact product and it seemed expensive at about $16.oo, however it seems that it may save a lot of time and hassle, so I think it may be worth a try

Advance on the Terrain Front

I have had this piece of shaped styrofoam from a Omaha Steaks cooler cover lid. I originally shaped it for 1/72nd models, but it should work for 15mm. It is a hill road with 2 mesas on either sides for observation and artillery. After helping my son work on his Diorama(LINK), I  got the itch to finish this piece and try some new techniques while completing this terrain piece.
There are some issues with this piece.  The worst is the transition to the base which is to steep, but I do not want to make the base any longer for storage issues, so I'll live for now with the un-realistic transitions.

So next I added some sand that I had around to the area that I decided to be the road.  The sand was rather yellow-ish, and I planed to crush it and make it more fine, but in a effort to just move on with the project, I put on the sand when I had a free moment. Using a 50/50 PVA (school white glue) with water I applied the sand. Then I brushed on another 50/50 PVA coar with a brush and aplied more sand and then after everything dried I covered the sand with a another 50/50 pva/water mix, to seal & hold the sand in place. Overall the sand looked good, except the  sand was more coarse than I would of liked, but I already know that when I pressed on with the project.

Next I applied Acylic gel with coarse pumice and a 50/50 mix of Craft paints Mustard Yellow and Dark Beige(Jo-Ann72129 Au Natural) to the vertical areas of the terrain to give it the color of a sandy bluff. This worked out well and looked very nice. I then mixed green and Olive Green into the rest of the mixed pumice gel and brushed it onto the areas that were to have grass added to them, so as to be a base for the grass.

99¢ Aircrafts for BGK

I was at 99¢ store with my son, when I spotted these planes for 99¢. I thought for the price I could use the for airstrikes in BGK, and at 99¢ what did I have to loose. Even though they are the wrong air forces, I can either remark them or just keep them the same remembering that on plane is axis and the other is allied. I think Ill go back and by some more at 99¢!

The Boy's Earth Day Diorama

My son had the assignment of making a piece of art to represent Earth Day, and he was excited because he could make a diorama. I shaped the base for him and I had him apply the glue and add the ground cover. He picked out and modified the pieces and I glue them on the base. His class mates were very impressed by the final results.

Quite the title. This was a time when I transitioned from pursuing building models to surfing. Days after this photo I started surfing and gave up modeling for about 23 years.

Father & Son Hobby Days

My son got the itch to work on model I bought him in the summer. With all the free time he has over the Easter holiday, he had no problem pushing me to help him finish model. I also bought him a Revell snap-together police car to work on all by him self.

MLK Tank Taco Airbrush Sessions

I do not know if Martin Luther King would approve of my hobby of creating a German vs Russian hate fest at Kursk in 15mm, but he may approve of the peaceful stress relieving effects the en-devour has on me after a week of fireworks at work.
January and a Santa Ana was forecast and I was going to make a push on the hobby front

Saturday 1/17/2015
My original idea was to be spraying early (10am), but state worker Friday got in the way.  After a week of strategic sent eMails, I needed to blow off some steam, and a bunch of beers with a co-worker at home got in the way of my prep.  So Saturday morning, I spent prepping multiple models using hot glue techniques to adhere models to sticks that I stab into styrofoam for holding models in place. It was not till about 1:45 that I started spraying. I first started off with priming some 15mm soviets in Vallejo Dunkelgleb Surface Primer. I wanted to do a light spray, however I ended up giving figure a heavy base, that dried fine.   The airbrush worked well, the pressure was around 20-18psi
Next I started on the German AFV's. Originally I wanted to do a mix of 1:1 Vallejo Middlestone to Yellow Ochre, however I spent so much time prepping that I did not to have much day left, so I decided just to go with straight middlestone over primer of dunkelgleb surface primer, which I'm not sure was needed (not sure if there is reason not to treat surface primer like regular Model Air Paint)
The temperature started dropping fast in my outdoor painting set up and the brush started clogging sporadically while spraying. The brush seem to stop spraying (hard to see when paint is being laid on model) at times, so I started pulling off the tip (i was using grey general purpose tip) and brushing the back of the tip with a brush soaked in airbrush cleaner and then putting tip back on and blowing cleaner thru brush.  However, I think that between the temperature dropping and the air getting much dryer, the Air Brush was clogging easier than usual.  I pushed the session until I finished all the german vehicles in middlestone.

List of Sprayed Items
Below: sprayed with Vallejo Surface Primer/Dunkelgleb RAL 7028  German Dark Yellow
35x PSC 15mm Soviet Infantry on 10 sticks
1x Zvezda 1/72 Soviet mortar team

Zvezda 15mm 251's

Sunday 1/18/2015
On Saturday I did not get to spray any green on the soviet vehicles, and that was main reason I was motivated keep spraying.  I started spraying at around 11am till about 1:40pm. The bush worked well the whole session, with no clogging.   It was warmer and I was also more organized, so spraying went smoother
List of Sprayed Items
Below: sprayed with Vallejo MA 1:1 ratio Russian Green 71.017 to Yellow Ochre 71.033 (did about 70drips of paint into paint cup with about a 1:6 ratio Paint thinner to Paint Mix.
